NYS DOT issues traffic alert for Cicero; closure will impact NSCSD students and families

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a traffic alert regarding the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project. The alert announced road closures and suggested detour routes that will directly impact traffic in the Cicero area. Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, South Bay Road will be closed to southbound traffic between East Pine Grove Road and along the South Bay Road bridge. The DOT expects the closure to and detours to remain in place through Oct. of 2025.

The North Syracuse Central School District has several schools in the immediate area and is anticipating its impact. The district’s transportation department has been working proactively with the DOT and is making plans to reroute buses to ensure the least amount of disruption. The department has also been in touch with the families of students known to be impacted by the closure.

The DOT is installing temporary traffic signals at the northbound and southbound approaches of the South Bay Road bridge over I-81 and has established a website showing a map with suggested detour routes.

North Syracuse Central School District schools are closed for mid-winter recess from Feb. 17 through Feb. 21. When school resumes on Feb. 24, the closure will be in effect and the NSCSD anticipates that some buses providing transportation for students in the impacted area may be delayed. Students and families are encouraged to plan ahead for delays when dropping off and picking up from Gillette Road Middle School, Cicero-North Syracuse High School and Cicero Elementary School.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Terry L. Ward urges all families to be patient and courteous to other drivers as we navigate these changes together. "Ensuring the safe and timely arrival of our students and staff is our top priority. We ask for your cooperation and understanding as our transportation team works to minimize disruptions. Please allow extra travel time, follow detour signs and be mindful of increased traffic in the affected areas."

The district appreciates the community’s support in maintaining a safe and smooth transportation experience for everyone. Stay informed by checking the DOT’s website for updates and thank you for your patience as we adjust to these necessary changes.
