District mourns the passing of Dr. Jerome F. Melvin, former superintendent
It is with profound sadness that the North Syracuse Central School District announces the passing of Dr. Jerome F. Melvin, former Superintendent of Schools and namesake of the District’s Administration Building. Dr. Melvin, whose career in education spanned decades, was a dedicated leader, advocate and visionary whose impact on the district and community is immeasurable. Dr. Melvin first retired from his post as Superintendent on Aug. 30, 2000, only to return to the district in 2006 after serving in multiple interim superintendencies across the region. During his tenure, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, compassion and an unwavering commitment to student success. He guided the district through challenges and opportunities with a steady hand, creating a collaborative environment where staff, students and families thrived. |

In reflecting on his work, Dr. Melvin once shared, “The idea of people working together, all employees. Something is always happening here [in education]. That will be something that I will miss.” These words epitomize his love for education and his belief in the power of teamwork and community. Dr. Melvin’s dedication extended far beyond his role as superintendent. During his time away from North Syracuse, he gained invaluable insights and experiences, serving as an interim superintendent in smaller districts and as an executive principal at Rome Free Academy. He credited these experiences with broadening his perspective and strengthening his leadership skills. In recognition of his profound influence, the North Syracuse Central School District’s Administration Building was named in his honor—a testament to the lasting legacy he left behind. His name is synonymous with excellence, service and the values that continue to guide the district. Interim Superintendent Michael Schiedo shared the district's heartfelt condolences, saying, “Dr. Melvin was not only the heart and soul of our district but also a guiding force who left an indelible mark on all of us—students, staff, and families alike. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will live on in the classrooms, hallways, and hearts of all those he touched.” The North Syracuse Central School District extends its deepest sympathies to Dr. Melvin’s family during this difficult time. Plans to honor his memory and legacy will be shared in the coming days. |
