Announcement from the NSCSD Board of Education: Dr. Terry Ward appointed Superintendent of Schools
Friday, Nov. 1, 2024: The North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education announced today that Dr. Terry Ward is expected to be appointed as the district’s new Superintendent of Schools at the upcoming Board of Education meeting on Nov. 4. Dr. Ward, who will assume his role on Jan. 6, 2025, brings extensive experience in educational leadership and a commitment to advancing academic achievement and inclusive school environments. Dr. Ward is currently the Superintendent of Schools for the Cato-Meridian Central School District, where he has served for more than six years. The search for a new superintendent was led by OCM BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Matt Cook and involved an extensive selection process. Staff, community and student surveys, along with focus groups, provided valuable input on the qualities and attributes desired in the district’s next leader. A highly qualified pool of candidates applied, and Dr. Ward emerged as the Board’s choice to lead the district forward. |
Dr. Ward's career spans notable accomplishments, including his expertise in strategic planning, capital project completion, and the development of an award-winning Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) plan that serves as a model for districts across New York State. Under his leadership, his current district doubled its 3-8 ELA proficiency outcomes, implemented a robust Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and launched innovative student programs to enhance learning opportunities. Dr. Ward’s fiscally responsible approach has also driven the successful development of a 5-year strategic plan, completed a $43 million capital project and led an Energy Performance Contract, benefiting students and stakeholders alike.
In addition to his K-12 experience, Dr. Ward contributes to the future of educational leadership as a Professor and Dissertation Chair for the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Leadership Institute at St. John Fisher University, where he advises doctoral candidates in the Executive Leadership Program. His work as an author and advisor on succession planning further solidifies his role as a thought leader in educational administration.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Ward to NSCSD,” stated Board President Michael A. Mirizio. “His proven track record of advancing academic excellence, commitment to students and staff and engagement with the community align seamlessly with our district’s mission and values. We are confident Dr. Ward will help lead to a successful future.”
The district extends its gratitude to Interim Superintendent Michael A. Schiedo, who has led since former Superintendent Daniel D. Bowles retired in Aug. 2024. Mr. Schiedo’s dedication has ensured stability and continued progress throughout the transition and the district is grateful for his leadership and service.
