CNS Celebrates National World Language Week

Beginning in 1957, a week has been set aside to celebrate World Languages. In recent years, it has become the practice to have National World Language Week during the first full week of March. The purpose of this celebration is to make the United States aware of the need for the importance of World Language study. This year, CNS hosted World Language Week from Monday, March 4 to Friday, March 8. The World Language department worked hard to create events to inspire World Language Study throughout the school. These events included a donation drive to help support New Americans, a door decorating contest, a World Language Trivia Competition and photo opportunities throughout the school.

The theme of this year's World Language Week was "Language Learning Promotes Friendship." To communicate this message effectively to students, pairs of wings were displayed throughout the building. World language students, along with members of the Human Rights Club and English Language Learners, colored world flags that were then transformed into feathers, forming the wings. This installation provided a wonderful photo opportunity for all students. Accompanying the wings were messages promoting respect for all people, the exploration of new cultures, and the embrace of different perspectives.

To foster connections with diverse cultures within our communities, multiple classes engaged in a donation drive. This initiative originated from the partnership that French Teacher Jessica Keane established with InterFaith Works during this school year. InterFaith Works is an organization committed to upholding the dignity of individuals and their faith traditions, promoting racial and religious equity, and fostering mutual understanding. Students contributed items such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, and other toiletries to support New Americans as they transition to our community.

This year, more than 600 students took part in World Language Trivia. French and Spanish teachers brought their classes to the library to tackle questions related to world languages and cultures. The questions covered a range of topics including language origins, translations, and cultural practices. For instance, do you know the official languages of the Olympics? Or the English translation of "sakura"?

Several classes enthusiastically took part in this year's door decorating contest. Students selected cultural themes and adorned doors on the second and third floors of the building. The chosen themes ranged from countries and food traditions to famous personalities. Following the completion of the door decorations, students and staff from across the building cast their votes in four categories.
