Coaching for Excellence:
Some North Syracuse Central School District instructional coaches had a unique opportunity this month when they partnered with NYSED coaches from across Central New York for a day of learning.
18 coaches took part in professional development and brainstorming sessions throughout the District. There was a ‘snowball’ strategizing segment where various problems were tossed into a pile, randomly retrieved, and addressed as a group. They also discussed how to handle different conversations as coaches.
Group members also spent some time in the classroom. They visited rooms across four district buildings and followed up later to discuss their observations and experiences.

GRMS Presents Oliver! Jr. March 23-25:
Lionel Bart’s Oliver sets to music the classic Charles Dickens' tale ‘Oliver Twist’. It tells the story of an orphaned boy named Oliver who experiences many trials in life before discovering his true heritage. His journey involves orphanage life, hunger, pickpockets, and caring adults. Oliver Jr. (a condensed version of Oliver) is filled with the same memorable music, such as ‘Consider Yourself’, ‘Food Glorious Food’, ‘Oom Pah Pah’, ‘As Long As He Needs Me’ and others. This musical features comical and dramatic acting and valuable life lessons. Oliver! was the first musical adaptation of a famous Charles Dickens work to become a stage hit.

Gillette Road Middle School Students Take Part in Lesson Lab:
Fifth graders in Ms. Guidetti’s classroom at Gillette Road Middle School had some special guests visit from the University of Rochester in February. The Warner School of Education Center held a Lesson Lab for the middle schoolers.
According to the center’s website, a Lesson Lab provides a shared experience in order to create a conversation about mathematical content, instructional practices, and student thinking. It includes a planning session, observation of the math lesson, and a debriefing discussion. The discussion allows participants to examine student work and reflect on the lesson. Art Reception and Exhibit with the Students of Roxboro Road Middle School:

The students of Roxboro Road Middle School will have their art on display at Salina Library throughout the month of March.
On Monday, March 13th, from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm, the students, along with their art teachers, will be in the library for an art reception. Come and learn about the techniques used for the different pieces of art and speak with the artists about their creative processes. Light refreshments will be provided.

February Northstar PRIDE Recipients:
During the first two weeks in February, more than 100 Cicero-North Syracuse High School students were recognized with Northstar PRIDE awards. Students are selected for recognition by teachers when they model the school’s five core values: Personal Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Engagement. Students can be recognized in more than one category and many students were selected in multiple areas.

C-NS Educator Recognized for Life Saving Action Teaches CPR to Students:
Joanne Thornton, a Health Teacher at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, was recognized by the NSCSD Board of Education in December for her lifesaving efforts using CPR. She is now teaching CPR to students in her class at C-NS.
Back in October, Cicero-North Syracuse High School Health Education Teacher Joanne Thornton found herself in a life or death situation. When she came across a man who had collapsed from a medical issue at a local gas station she sprung into action. She performed CPR with some help from a gas station employee until paramedics arrived.

Students Attend Syracuse Crunch French Night:
For more than 10 years the Syracuse Crunch have hosted a French Night. The educational experience is organized in conjunction with the American Association of Teachers of French of Central New York.
Students from 14 schools attended this year’s game, including some CNS junior and high schoolers taking French. The Syracuse Crunch try to host the event while playing a Canadian team. This year’s match was with the Laval Rocket, an affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens based in Quebec.
The experience includes much more than just watching the game though. French vocabulary words were displayed on arena screens, French music was played, and students took part in a trivia competition during intermission.

C-NS High School Athletes Spend Time at Smith Road Elementary:
Some Cicero-North Syracuse High School athletes ‘teamed-up’ recently to teach younger students. They were invited to Smith Road Elementary School’s January Assembly to discuss respect and how it translates to team sports.
The eight student-athletes included a mix of football, basketball, and soccer players. They answered a number of questions like what respect means to them and how they respect their coaches and opponents.
The visit was part of the “Team Up 4 Community” initiative. It aims to build character among athletes through the promotion and collaboration of community service and social responsibility.

This year’s Northstar Network student broadcast crew “core” group of students includes (pictured above from left to right): Hunter Basciuska, Aaron Tarquinio, Drew Matyasik, Johnny Lisi and Landon Cook. The group is pictured getting ready to broadcast the C-NS vs. CBA Section III Championship game at the JMA Wireless Dome this past November. Community Input Needed Regarding District Name and Potential Change - Deadline Extended Through Feb. 27:
The North Syracuse Central School District is asking the community for input regarding how they know the District and is exploring the possibility of changing its name to the Cicero-North Syracuse Central School District. The reason for considering a change is because many community members already think of the District as the “CNS” School District primarily because of the fact that CNS is the name of our high school and all of our sports teams and co-curricular activities. The District wants to have a consistent and recognizable name so that students and staff are unified and have pride in our schools. NSCSD Students and Staff Spread Holiday Cheer to Community:
Many thanks to the many NSCSD staff, students coaches, teachers, leaders and student groups who helped make the recent holiday season warmer, brighter and better for various students and community members! All schools in the District held their own multi-cultural holiday events and donation drives for various charity organizations. Some of the many groups to benefit from the efforts included The CNS Food Project (helping our own students), Make-A-Wish, The Rescue Mission, The Salvation Army, The Christmas Bureau, Meals on Wheels, Toys for Tots and Veteran’s groups. In addition to the various charity events, schools worked hard to spread kindness and share the spirt of the season.

C-NS Students Participate in Drone Day at OCM BOCES:
On Friday, January 13, OCM BOCES held its first-ever Drone Day today at their main campus in Liverpool. As the educational organization gets ready to start a Drone service for students in its 23 component districts, it brought together about 30 staff and students from those districts to get a first-hand look at drones. Marty Miner, a North Syracuse Central School District Technology Teacher at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, brought three of his students to the event to share their experiences with drone technology. North Syracuse Junior High School "Project Runway" Winners Announced:
Again this school year, the North Syracuse Junior High School Library hosted their very own Project Runway! This is the second year that Ms. Bellucci's Fashion 9 classes have been tasked with creating beautiful wedding dress designs out of toilet paper, mimicking the popular show, Project Runway. Students and staff at the junior high then had the very difficult task of voting on their favorites.
The results are in and the school is proud to announce winners from the four categories of Best Overall Design, Best Use of Fabric, Best Execution & Detail, and Most Original Design. District Will Offer Micron Chip Camp Thanks to Grant Received by North Syracuse Education Foundation:
The North Syracuse Central School District is excited to announce that approximately 120-150 NSCSD students will have the opportunity to attend Chip Camp this June thanks to a grant from the Micron Foundation, awarded to the North Syracuse Education Foundation (NSEF) on November 30.
Sponsored by the Micron Foundation, Chip Camp is a day camp filled with hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) activities related to semiconductor manufacturing and engineering jobs. Chip Camp attendees will learn and experience what engineers and scientists do every day in a semiconductor company. Thanks to the grant funding, the camp will be offered at no cost to 7th, 8th, and 9th grade NSCSD students.

District Voters Approve Capital Referendum:
December 7, 2022: North Syracuse Central School District voters have approved a capital project referendum for $61.2 million including safety & security and infrastructure improvements throughout the District, along with the installation of a multipurpose turf field for athletic teams. 786 votes were cast, with the final tally being 485 yes votes and 301 no votes for a 61.7% voter approval. The majority of the project will be covered by state aid, reducing the tax levy increase to less than ½ percent or approximately $9 annually on a home valued at $100,000.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022, a group of Gillette Road Middle School students received their school’s Positivity Project Student Spotlight awards.
