CNS Students Advance to State Robotics Competition CNS Students Advance to State Robotics Competition: On Sunday, February 27, two teams of Cicero-North Syracuse High School students competed in a Rochester robotics competition and one of those teams has qualified for the upcoming Northern New York State Competition.  The State competition will take place on Monday, March 7 at the OnCenter Convention Center in Syracuse. The student team is being led by Cicero-North Syracuse High School Technology Teacher Martin Miner. Good luck to all!          
March is Music in Our Schools Month March is Music in Our Schools Month: During the month of March, schools across the nation celebrate National Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM). The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. The North Syracuse Central School District is asking students, teachers and families to share their music-related photos and videos throughout the month. The photos will be featured in the weekly NorthStar Lights newsletter and high resolution images will be considered for the NSCSD website. Photos can be submitted online by clicking here or can be emailed to Laurie Cook at lcook@nscsd.org .   
School Mask Mandate Has Ended School Mask Mandate Has Ended: Beginning March 2, the North Syracuse Central School District adopted new masking guidance provided by the New York State Department of Health for Pre-K - 12 schools. Universal masking will no longer be required for students, staff members, or visitors to schools. This includes on school buses. There will be some cases, which are outlined below, when individuals will be required (or strongly recommended) to wear a mask. Masking is still  required  when: Returning to work or school for days 6-10 post COVID-19 infection. This includes participation in sports and extracurricular activities. Social Media and Mental Health Webinar Social Media and Mental Health Webinar: North Syracuse Central School District families are invited to attend a special, free webinar on social media usage and mental health issues. The webinar, provided through the School Mental Health Resource and Training Center, will take place on Tuesday, March 15 from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.  It is no secret that over the last 15 years that internet and media use has skyrocketed. Roxboro Road Elementary School Students Have Snow Much Fun Learning About the Olympics Roxboro Road Elementary School Students Have Snow Much Fun Learning About the Olympics: As elementary school students across the world learn about and see the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in their lives, students at Roxboro Road Elementary School are getting a hands-on feel for one of the events right at school. RRE students were able to take time last week to create and use their very own luge as part of their physical education class.  Fina Santangelo and Stephen Mirizio, the school’s two PE teachers, along with Becky Jones, APE teacher and student teacher Lauren Ott, thought the makeshift luge would provide real experience and FUN for the students!          ...
Kindergarten Registration Dates Continue Throughout March Kindergarten Registration Dates Continue Throughout March: The North Syracuse Central School District has announced its registration dates for 2022-2023 kindergarten students. In order for your child to enter school next fall, he or she must be five (5) years old on or before December 1, 2022. Elementary schools are holding registration at individual school buildings on the following dates by appointment. Families of known new students will receive an appointment letter from their child’s home school in February. Families who will be registering a new kindergarten student and who have not received a letter by the 3rd week in February, should contact the school to schedule an appointment. Allen Road Elementary School Students Celebrate 100 Days Allen Road Elementary School Students Celebrate 100 Days: Second-grade students in Nancy Collins' class at Allen Road Elementary School were some of the many throughout the NSCSD to celebrate 100 days of learning on Wednesday, February 16. Each year teachers throughout the District select various themes to celebrate 100 days of school. This year, Collins' students created colorful posters using 100 pieces of an object of their choosing. Collins, who has worked in the District for 29 years, was impressed with her students' work and wanted to share their creations.  She said, "It is always fun to see what our students create for their 100 th day of school. I am thrilled to have the students in school five, full days a week. It's great to be going forward in a positive direction with the pandemic. ...
Winners chosen in CNS Optimist Club’s Oratorical Contest Winners chosen in CNS Optimist Club’s Oratorical Contest: After a multi-year hiatus, the Optimist Club of Cicero-North Syracuse once again held an oratorical contest for NSCSD students. This year’s contest, “Staying Optimistic in Challenging Times,” took place on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the Jerome F. Melvin Administrative Office Building.   With a top award of a $2,500 college scholarship, all students under the age of 19 who live within the boundaries of the North Syracuse Central School District were eligible to participate. Contestants were asked to speak on the official topic for four to five minutes with timing beginning at the first spoken word.   This year’s winners are: Gold medal: CNS Senior Francesca Tortora (pictured far right) Silver ...
Roxboro Road Elementary Builds Community with “International” Help Roxboro Road Elementary Builds Community with “International” Help: Students at Roxboro Road Elementary School have had a “international” visitor to their school this year as an “Aussie” has come to call. The guest, Sydney, is a 16 year-old Australian Shepard. Sydney’s human, Natalie Walters, is the school’s new Restorative Practices Specialist. Sydney has been joining Natalie at the school some Friday mornings.    Natalie Walters began her new career in the North Syracuse Central School District this year as one of two Restorative Practices Specialists (RPS) to join the District. Cicero Elementary Swishes the Competition in Elementary Shootout Cicero Elementary Swishes the Competition in Elementary Shootout: Each year, elementary schools in the North Syracuse Central School District compete with each other in basketball shootout events at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The competition pits teams of elementary students against each other during halftime of separate C-NS Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball games. This year’s girls’ shootout event was held on Tuesday, February 1 and the winning team was from Cicero Elementary School. 3rd Grade Students Have “Magnetic” Science Lesson 3rd Grade Students Have “Magnetic” Science Lesson: Students in Rachel Green’s third grade class at Roxboro Road Elementary School recently completed a hands-on, two-part lesson about electromagnetic energy. In the first part, students worked in teams to design a magnetic trash-sorting tool. The tool is a model of a device that could be used to separate steel from classroom trash. Students were provided with a set of specific criteria for success and design constrains. In the second part of this lesson, students worked in teams to build their model trash-sorting devices. Each group evaluated the success of their model by counting how many steel objects were moved and how many other objects were moved to the recycling container. Mental Health Professionals Help Students Explore Overall Wellness Mental Health Professionals Help Students Explore Overall Wellness: Kristen Stanton is the District-wide School-Based Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator for the North Syracuse Central School District. Along with a team of mental health professionals throughout the District, Kristen has been working to provide wellness activities for all students.   For the month of January, the team set a theme of “Pathway to Wellness” which explores the six areas of wellness: environmental, emotional, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual. Wall of Distinction Ceremony Rescheduled for May 13 Wall of Distinction Ceremony Rescheduled for May 13: The North Syracuse Central School District has scheduled a revised date for its 2022 Wall of Distinction Induction ceremony.  The ceremony will now take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Technology Education Students Learn Robotics Technology Education Students Learn Robotics: Students in Lynn Zajac’s 7 th Grade Technology Education classes at Roxboro Road Middle School have four major projects during their half-year course at the school. Technology Education courses have long been known for providing students the opportunity to BUILD things. For their current assignment though, students in Lynn’s class are being graded on how well they DEMOLISH structures.   Lynn’s students are working on the second part of a unit on robotics, their final one in their Technology Education course. Students are selected for recognition by teachers when they model the school’s five core values: Personal Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Engagement.  Students can be recognized in more than one category and many of the January students were selected in multiple areas. CNS Vocal Jazz Ensemble Gives Holiday Performance CNS Vocal Jazz Ensemble Gives Holiday Performance: During the holidays, The Cicero-North Syracuse High School Vocal Jazz ensemble performed at The Fireside Inn for “Making Spirits Bright” to benefit the Rescue Mission of CNY and the Salvation Army. This is the second year the Vocal Jazz has been asked to participate. The fundraiser started as an idea that musician Letizia Pinkel had to bring musicians and community members together for a good cause. The Christmas party featured many of Central New York’s most notable musicians and all of the proceeds went to The Rescue Mission just in time for the Holidays. Jessica shares that  Dominick and Daniel Ciciarelli , alumni of Roxboro Road Elementary School, generously donated hundreds of hats and mittens for students at the school.   Daniel Ciciarelli  is pictured as he prepares to drop off the donations at Roxboro Road Elementary School. Daniel is a 2011 graduate of C-NS and was the first graduate of the District to receive three Career and Technical Education (CTE) Endorsements on his high school diploma. Board of Education Approves Revised Calendar Board of Education Approves Revised Calendar: The North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education approved a revised 2021-2022 academic calendar at their January 3 meeting. The revised calendar, which is available by clicking here, includes the following revisions: January 25, 26, 27 and 28, 2022 are no longer Regents Exam dates. These dates are now normal instructional days for C-NS High School. April 6, 2022 will now be a half-day for all Pre-K – 12 students May 20, 2022 will now be a half-day instead of May 13, 2022 for all Pre-K – 12 students
Teacher and Teaching Assistant Unions Join Forces to Spread Holiday Joy Teacher and Teaching Assistant Unions Join Forces to Spread Holiday Joy: For more than 20 years, staff in the North Syracuse Central School District have worked hard to ensure that all families in the District have food on hand to get them through the holiday recess. In 1999, the Teaching Assistant Unit had a food drive and put together eight food baskets for students’ families. Since that time, the community’s need has increased but fortunately, so has the District’s generosity and staff willingness to help. Mindy Bristol is President of The North Syracuse Teaching Assistant Association (NSTAA) for the NSCSD and has been involved with the food drive since it began. Mindy has watched the need grow from just eight baskets that first year to overflowing bags for 152 families this year.   ...
